A feeder reel should form a balanced set with the rod and hold an appropriate amount of line or braid. For short distances, the convenience of frequent casts matters, while when fishing further from the shore, a larger spool diameter can facilitate line casting and quick retrieval. The reel's weight should not unnecessarily burden the entire setup.

Drag, Gear Ratio, and Clip

A smooth drag helps control the fight on a thin leader. The gear ratio and line pickup rate affect the speed of retrieving the rig, and a properly shaped clip allows for consistent casting distance. Spool capacity is also important: too deep may require a large amount of backing, while a shallow spool must hold the working length with some reserve.
