The free spool mechanism allows you to set a slight spool resistance when the rod is set aside, and after turning the handle, switch the reel to the main brake. This solution is useful for calmer fishing when the rig stays in the water longer. However, it does not replace proper rod setup or constant monitoring of the fishing spot.
What to Check Besides the Free Spool?
The usefulness of the reel is also determined by the size and profile of the spool, the quality of the line lay, the clip, the gear ratio, and the smoothness of the main brake. The additional mechanism increases the weight and complexity of the design, so it’s worth assessing whether it truly suits your fishing style. A wider selection includes feeder reels, and spare spools for feeder reels will make it easier to change line diameter or switch to braid.
