Section absorbing the cast load
The leader protects the thinner main line during the powerful cast of a heavy feeder cage. Its thicker part passes through the guides and winds onto the spool, transferring the highest instantaneous load. The tapered variant gradually changes diameter, which helps reduce the size of the connection to the main line.
