Long-distance casting rods
Carp rods for long-distance casting include models designed to send the end tackle over long distances directly from the bank. They combine the power required for a dynamic cast with blank action that allows you to control the fish during the fight. This category includes both carp rods focused on achieving maximum distance and more versatile casting rods used on medium and large waters.
Long-distance rods are used for casting the rig, not for baiting. For repeated casting with a filled spod, more powerful SPOD and marker rods are designed, forming a separate group of equipment.
Rod length alone does not determine casting distance
A 12 ft designation and a 3.50 lb test curve do not automatically mean that a particular model is an ideal rod for long-distance casting. The blank construction, distribution of power, vibration recovery speed, guide layout, handle length and the balance of the entire rod are also important. Only the combination of these elements allows the lead to be accelerated efficiently and energy loss during the cast to be minimised.
Long-distance rod blanks usually have a clear power reserve in the butt section, while the middle and tip sections are responsible for smoothly transferring energy to the rig. However, the construction should not be completely stiff, as after casting the rod must still cushion carp runs and maintain control over the fish.
12, 12.6 and 13 ft carp rods with increased power
Among carp rods for long-distance casting, models measuring 12, 12.6 and 13 ft dominate. Longer constructions provide greater leverage during the cast, while 12 ft versions retain more compact dimensions and the efficiency needed on swims with limited space.
The most common test curves range from 3.50 to 4.00 lb. For some long-distance rods, the manufacturer specifies a recommended casting weight instead, for example 3–5 oz or 4–6 oz. Parameters given in pounds and ounces should not be treated as direct equivalents, as they describe different rod characteristics.
Tackle components for fishing at long range
The potential of a casting rod is best utilised with a properly matched reel, mainline, shock leader and lead. Front drag carp reels with large spools are the most commonly chosen reels for casting, reducing the resistance of line leaving the spool, while aerodynamic carp casting leads stabilise the rig in flight.
The category includes carp rods designed for regular casting on large waters, gravel pits and venues where the rig needs to be placed far from the bank. It includes models differing in length, power and action, but united by the same purpose – effective casting of the rig over long distances.
