SPOD and marker rods are specialised carp rods designed for baiting from the bank and feature finding. SPOD rods for baiting with a spod rocket
A SPOD rod, also referred to as a spod rod, has sufficient power reserves for repeatedly casting a filled spod rocket. The range is dominated by 12 and 13 ft models with an increased test curve, used for baiting at medium and long distances. A powerful butt section enables dynamic blank loading, while durable guides support use with thicker monofilament or braid.
Baiting rods create a complete setup with suitably matched spod rockets and SPOD reels, whose large spool and fast retrieve make it easier to perform consecutive casts.
Marker rods for feature finding
Marker rods are used to assess the swim structure before placing the rig. Their blank should transmit vibrations generated while dragging the lead, allowing you to assess the hardness of the lakebed, locate silt, gravel and distinct changes in the bottom contour. Combined with a marker float, they also allow you to determine the depth in a selected spot.
Such a setup uses feature finding leads, whose shape helps to read contact with the lakebed. A dedicated marker rod may offer a slightly more responsive action than a typical design intended solely for casting a spod rocket.
SPOD/marker designs combining both functions
A significant part of the category consists of SPOD/marker rods, which combine the power needed for baiting with a blank that allows information transmitted through the marker setup to be read. Such rods can handle both spod rockets and marker floats and leads, reducing the number of separate setups taken to the water.
