Common carp heavier than the mirror carp from 2018
In November 2018, Michel Schoenmakers caught a mirror carp weighing 51.2 kg at Euro Aqua. This catch became one of the most recognised events in the history of carp records.
Ash Hegarty achieved a result 0.8 kg higher. The type of fish is also significant: the new announcement concerns a common carp, whereas Schoenmakers’ specimen was a mirror carp. The common carp from Euro Aqua therefore exceeded the weight that had long been associated with the record mirror carp from this fishery.
Euro Aqua announced the 52 kg result as a new world record. The announcement did not provide any information about the catch being officially ratified by an organisation maintaining a record register.
Euro Aqua Lake. A Hungarian fishery of record carp
Euro Aqua Lake is located near Nemesvita, close to Lake Balaton. It is a private fishery established in a former gravel pit. In Polish descriptions of the venue, its area is estimated at around 12 hectares.
It gained recognition primarily thanks to catches of very large carp. Both Michel Schoenmakers’ mirror carp from 2018 and Ash Hegarty’s common carp came from the same water. The 52 kg result adds another event to the history of this Hungarian venue.
How does the Euro Aqua result compare with catches in Poland?
The news of a 52 kg carp also draws attention to the biggest fish caught in Poland. We cover the history of the national record in the article What is the carp record in Poland?.
A separate matter is the growth potential of carp. A single catch from Euro Aqua does not make it possible to predict when a similar fish will be caught in Polish waters. You can read more about the size these fish can reach and the conditions affecting their growth in the article How large can carp grow in Poland?.
