Polish Record – the biggest grass carp caught in Poland
The current official Polish record for catching grass carp was set in 1998 and remains unbeaten to this day. The record grass carp weighed 39.20 kg and measured 132 cm. The angler who caught this impressive specimen was Krzysztof Ławnicki. Despite the passage of years, greater knowledge about fishing techniques, and significant advancements in technology and materials used in fishing equipment, no one has yet managed to break this incredible record. This only emphasizes the uniqueness of that catch.
Why is it so difficult to break the grass carp record in Poland?
Although grass carps weighing over 30 kg are often found in Polish waters, the record from the 90s remains unbeaten. Why?
It is most likely because anglers who catch record specimens do not want to report their catches to avoid "burning" the fisheries where these fish are found. Grass carps are a species characterized by significant weight gain, and the largest specimens are often found in natural lakes and old gravel pits. We are almost certain that the 40 kg barrier has already been exceeded in Poland, but the angler or anglers who achieved this most likely do not want to boast about it, especially if the fisheries belonged to public waters.
Remember that an official Polish record is only recognized if it is reported in the appropriate manner.
How to catch a record-breaking grass carp?
1. Effective Baiting
Grass carps love corn – even a single grain on the hair rig can work wonders! The most common tactic for catching grass carps, especially in large fisheries, is heavy baiting with a mix of grains (the most popular are corn and tiger nuts), enriched with boilies, especially those dedicated to grass carps, usually with fruity notes, with mulberry being a favorite. A good choice is also boilies with spices, such as Robin Red, which often attract large specimens.
2. Equipment ready for extreme challenges
Handling a grass carp requires robust equipment, with carp fishing gear being ideal. Their torpedo-like body allows them to accelerate in an instant. Therefore:
- Carp rod should have a large power reserve, but it is not worth overdoing it with stiffness. Grass carps, due to their sudden, strong runs, can heavily overload the equipment. Therefore, a rod with a more parabolic action will provide additional flexibility and better cushion the fish's sudden runs.
- Carp reel must be solid, with a key feature being a quick and precise drag, allowing you to adjust its power instantly during an unexpected fish "run".
- Carp landing net – particularly durable, as a grass carp can damage even the strongest models, and with a large net, as grass carps are long and have muscular, stiff bodies. The best choice is a model with a large, stiff frame and a deep net.
3. Handling Technique
The first phase of handling is often calm, but you must be vigilant. The greatest threat arises at the bank when the grass carp feels threatened. The key is quick and confident netting and immediately lifting the net to prevent the fish from making a sudden run.
Will the grass carp record in Poland be broken?
Looking at the development of angling and the increasingly better conditions at Polish fisheries, there is a good chance that the 1998 record will be officially broken in the future. Many fisheries today offer excellent conditions for the growth of large grass carps, and modern anglers' experience grows with each trip.
Maybe you will be the next record holder? Prepare yourself, choose the right fishery and... wait for the catch of a lifetime
