Blow Back Rig – A rig for every occasion!

It is safe to say that this is one of the most popular and effective rigs in the history of carp fishing.

It is highly versatile, as it presents baits perfectly with wafters, pop-ups, snowman rigs, bottom baits and particles. Its high effectiveness comes from the ring, which, when a carp ejects the bait, allows it to move far away from the hook point, resulting in a perfect hook hold in the fish’s bottom lip on the vast majority of takes.

How to tie an effective Blow Back Rig? I’ll show you step by step how I do it:

To make this rig, you will need:

  1. Carp hook – in my opinion, a Longshank pattern with a long shank works best
  2. Coated braid
  3. Metal Rig Ring matched in diameter to the size of the hook used
  4. Kicker hook aligner; alternatively, you can use heat shrink tubing
  5. Braid weight in the form of ready-made tungsten or lead beads; alternatively, tungsten putty
  6. Boilie stop for securing the bait on the hair
  7. Baiting needle for mounting the bait on the hair
  8. Scissors for cutting the braid
  9. Tool for stripping the coating
  10. Tool for tightening knots
  11. Bait – in my case, a boilie

Steps to follow:

1 Prepare the braided hooklink material, then measure out a 15 cm section. If you prefer uncoated braids, proceed directly to step 3.
2 Using a dedicated stripping tool, remove the coating from the measured section of braided hooklink.
3 Measure and cut the required length of braid; in my case, it was 40 cm.
4 Tie a loop to attach the bait to the hair. To tighten the loop knot properly, you can use a knot puller tool. Cut off any excess braid left after tying the loop.
5 Thread the bait you intend to use onto the hair rig and secure it with a bait stop.
6 Prepare the metal ring, then set its distance from the bait – make sure the hair is not too short and that the distance between the ring and the boilie is at least two centimetres. This distance can be increased as the size of the bait used increases.
7 Securely attach the metal ring to the braid forming the hair, making sure it sits at a 90-degree angle to the braid.
8 Prepare the carp hook. Slide the ring tied to the braid onto the hook and position it on the shank.
9 Use a standard knotless knot to tie the hook.
10 Once the knot has been tightened, make sure the hair exits in line with the hook shank.
11 Prepare an aligner or a suitably sized section of shrink tube and, using a fine needle, thread it onto the braid.
12 Gently slide the line aligner/tubing section onto the hook eye in the correct direction so that the whole setup forms a crescent shape. In the case of heat shrink tubing, shape it using hot steam.
13 At the point where the previously removed braid coating ends, add weight using a dedicated sinker that will not damage the braid once attached. You can also use tungsten putty. If you have used an uncoated braid, attach the weight approximately 4–5 cm from the kicker.
14 Finish the hooklink with a classic loop, allowing you to attach it to a standard swivel or a quick-change swivel. Tighten the formed loop using a knot puller so that the knot beds down properly.
