The Free Spool is a type of additional brake in a reel primarily used by carp anglers and trolling anglers. In carp fishing, this brake is used to secure the rod during long fishing sessions when the rods are resting on supports and we are waiting for a bite. By engaging the "Free Spool", the fish can take line from the reel with minimal resistance (with much less force than with the standard brake). Engaging the free spool is done by moving a lever. Disengaging the free spool can be done in two ways - by moving the free spool lever or by turning the reel handle.
