A leader is a section of the rig that connects the hooklink to the mainline. The most common type of leader used is a braided line with a lead core, known as "LeadCore". The purpose of this part of the rig is to keep the terminal section of the setup as close to the bottom as possible, to protect the fish from line cuts during the fight, and to safeguard the rig from abrasion or being cut by underwater obstacles during the battle with the fish. Nowadays, leaders are also made from special composite materials, typically consisting of a combination of fluorocarbon and special polymers.
