Line Sinkers

Line sinkers, also known as carp backleads, are additional weights attached to the main line or braid after casting or boat fishing the rig out. Their purpose is to bring the line closer to the bottom and reduce its presence in the water column. A backlead does not replace a classic carp weight — it is an extra element that helps to add weight to the main line and increase the rig’s stealth.

Carp Backleads for Line Weighting

A backlead helps reduce the line’s contact with fish swimming through the swim, which is especially important on waters with high pressure and cautious carp. A weighted line is less visible and less detectable in the water column, particularly near the fishing spot. Line sinkers can be used both after a classic cast from the bank and after boat fishing the rig out with a bait boat or pontoon.

Types of Line Sinkers

This category includes backleads that are attached to the line after the rig is laid down, as well as flying backleads — light weights permanently mounted on the main line or braid. Individual models may differ in attachment method, weight, and intended use. The weight is generally selected based on the fishing distance, depth, line angle, water flow, and the required degree of weighting.

Sinking the Line Near the Bottom

Line sinkers are also useful when it is necessary to reduce the line’s contact with floating vegetation, branches, waterfowl, or boat traffic. However, their main function remains to keep the main line or braid closer to the bottom and improve the stealth of the carp rig. This is a practical complement to classic carp weights, especially where a high-running line could spook the fish.
