A fishing mat separates the fish from stones, concrete, and dry ground during unhooking or brief preparation for a photo. In feeder and float fishing, it is especially useful for larger fish that cannot be comfortably handled directly over the landing net. The material should be moistened before placing the fish on it.
Size and transport
The mat should be longer than the typical fish caught at a given fishing spot and have padding to protect against uneven surfaces. A compact design fits more easily on a trolley but must not compromise safety. After use, remove any dirt and dry the material. Other fish handling equipment includes landing nets and feeder nets, and proper landing net baskets help to calmly finish the fight.
