A grounding weight helps assess the hardness and structure of the substrate through the feel of resistance when dragging the rig. Different resistance is felt with mud, fine gravel, and distinct stops may indicate vegetation or snags. The result also depends on the type of line and the sensitivity of the rod, so it’s worth comparing several casts in nearby spots.

Protrusions, ribbing, or an irregular profile increase the amount of information transmitted from the bottom but may create more resistance when reeling in. Choose the weight so as to maintain contact without overloading the rod. Other feeder weights are also used for fishing, while aerodynamic feeder bomb weights are a practical choice for presenting the rig without a portion of bait.
