The Combi Rig is a legendary leader that has been used by carp anglers around the world for many years to target the most cautious carp.
Its combination usually involves pairing fluorocarbon with a short section of soft braid. The connection of the stiff section with the soft one can be done using various knots, but I especially like to do it using the Krimp Tool crimping tool, which is one of my most frequently used tools. With it, the loops are always perfect, and the connection is super strong. I most often use the Combi Rig when casting because the stiff material prevents it from tangling. I also use it when baiting from a boat, setting up on the slopes near the banks where the water is still quite clear. I am then confident that it is practically invisible on the bottom and that small fish can't tangle it.
Now I'll show you step by step how I create my favorite Combi Rig!
To make the rig, you will need:
Carp hook, in my opinion, the best model is the Wide Gape type with a wide gape bend
Tie a small loop that will be used to attach the bait to the hair rig.
Cut approximately 20 cm of braid from the spool to ensure that after tying the rig, you have sufficient length to connect the supple material with the fluorocarbon.
Thread the bait you'll be using onto the hair and secure it with a bait stop.
Bait set, now it's time to tie your favorite hook rig, as the Combi Rig is a very versatile leader – I'll be using my preferred choice, the Blow Back Rig.
Prepare metal rings.
Thread the ring onto the hooklink braid.
Depending on your personal beliefs, determine the distance of the bait from the ring and tie it – but remember that the hair should not be too short, and the distance between the ring and the boilie should be at least two centimeters.
Also, ensure that the ring is positioned at a 90-degree angle relative to the hair rig.
Prepare a Carp Hook.
Slide the ring onto the shank of the hook and use a standard "knotless knot" to attach the hook.
After tightening the knot, make sure that the hair exits the knot in line with the hook shank.
Now prepare a rig aligner or heat shrink tubing and using a fine needle, thread it onto the braid.
Then gently slide it onto the hook eye in the correct direction so that the whole assembly forms the shape of a crescent.
Currently, the first part is ready, and we are now moving on to the stiff section of the leader.
Prepare a fluorocarbon leader that serves as the stiff section of the rig.
Cut approximately 20cm of fluorocarbon using the Krimp Tool crimping pliers.
Prepare two clamping sleeves.
Thread the fluorocarbon through the sleeves creating perfect, minimalist loops.
Crimp the sleeves using crimping pliers.
Trim any excess fluorocarbon that remains after crimping and forming a loop of the appropriate size.
Prepare two knot pullers and gently stretch the fluorocarbon to straighten it out.
Combine two ready-made sections by attaching a soft braid to the fluorocarbon loop using a grinner knot, leaving approximately 3-5 centimeters of the soft section.
Prepare a Weighting Paste.
Apply it at the joint where the soft braid connects with the fluorocarbon.
Ready Rig! - now you can place your Combi Rig in the baited spot and experience its effectiveness!
