Blow Back Rig - Piotrek Wardenga's Leader #1

It's safe to say that this is one of the most popular and effective rigs in the history of carp fishing.

It has a very wide range of applications as it presents well with wafters, pop-ups, snowman rigs, sinking boilies as well as grains. Its high effectiveness is owed to the ring which, when a carp attempts to expel the bait, allows it to be pushed far away from the hook's point, which in the majority of takes results in a perfect hookset in the fish's bottom lip.

How to tie an effective Blow Back Rig? I'll show you step by step how I do it:

To make the rig you will need:

  1. Carp hook, my favorite is the Longshank model with a long shank
  2. Coated braid
  3. Metal Rig Ring matched in diameter to the size of the hook used
  4. Hook Kicker, you can also use heat shrink tubing
  5. Braid weighting in the form of ready-made tungsten or lead beads, alternatively weighting putty
  6. Stopper for securing the bait on the hair
  7. Needle for mounting the bait on the hair
  8. Scissors for cutting the braid
  9. Tool for removing the coating
  10. Tool for tightening knots
  11. Bait, in my case a boilies

Steps to follow:

1 Prepare your leader braid, then measure a 15 cm section of it. If you prefer uncoated braids, proceed directly to step number 3.
2 Using a special sheath remover, strip the sheath from the measured section of the braided line.
3 Measure and cut the required length of braid, which in my case was 40 cm.
4 Tie a small loop that will be used to attach the bait to the hair rig. To properly tighten the knot of the loop, you can use a pulling tool. Cut off the excess braid remaining after tying the loop.
5 Thread the bait you'll be using onto the hair rig and secure it with a bait stop.
6 Prepare the metal ring and then determine its distance from the bait - remember that the hair should not be too short, and the distance between the ring and the boilie should be at least two centimeters. This distance can be increased as the size of the bait used is increased.
7 Secure the metal ring firmly to the braid that forms the hair rig and make sure that it is positioned at a 90-degree angle relative to the braid.
8 Prepare your carp hook. Install the ring attached to the braid onto the hook and set its position on the shank.
9 Use a standard "knotless knot" to tie the hook. Instructions on how to tie a "knotless knot" can be found here (insert link).
10 After tightening the knot, make sure that the hair extends from it in line with the shank of the hook.
11 Prepare a rig aligner or a section of shrink tubing of the appropriate length and thread it onto the braid using a fine needle.
12 Gently slide the aligner/tubing section onto the hook's eye in the correct direction so that the entire assembly forms a crescent shape. If using shrink tubing, shape it appropriately with the use of hot steam.
13 At the point where the previously removed braid sheath ends, place a weight in the form of a dedicated sinker, which will not damage the braid after being secured. You can also use tungsten putty. If you have used a bare braid, install the weight approximately 4-5 cm from the rig aligner.
14 Finish your rig with a classic loop, allowing you to mount it on a standard swivel or a quick-change swivel. Tighten the formed loop with a pulling tool to ensure the knot is seated properly.
